books and stuff

Hey girls, I thought it would be fun to send each other comments on the books we are reading. Reason for this is that with increasing amount of senior moments, it is better to talk about books immediately after finishing while we hopefully can recall plot etc.

Trouble is I am not reading at the moment but this will change.

Well how very clever Gringomutti. Let me kick off by a quick word on Agaat. Its brilliant. There.

Suspect more details required. To give you some idea: I sat down and fell in. Read the first 300 pages or so in one sitting. No one more surprised than I, having recently ploughed my way through more profound South African texts that I would care to mention, or ever to revisit. I Just. Fell. In. Fended off all pleas from offspring and others for food, homework, transportation, care. I dreaded that it would be Too Clever, but it isn't: it's touching and gripping and quite quite beautiful. I also thought that it would be overdetermined, an excess of meaning. No: in spite of it being long and quite dense, every word seems necessary. The translation is brilliant because it doesn't feel translated, yet it retains the melodies of the Afrikaans. My goodness. Colour me astonished. Sorry, all, for once again spurning a book for, like, ever, then becoming all evangelical-like. I'll try not to do it again.

OK. Can see the smart ones around here. Come on you others or maybe you are not at home?

ilovenotcamping (oooh what a name) I just cannot believe it. Jonathan Jo has nothing on you (geddit?).OK. After Eileen can I have a turn at Agaat please?

Let me tell you about Something to tell you by Hanuf Kureishi. I couldn't bear to return this book at our last bookclub meeting, remember? Well, now I am bored. It began so well. Eileen you will take to this book. It's about a psychotherapist who has a secret. Trouble is, he spills the beans about a quarter of the way through and for the life of me I can't see why I should continue reading. Lots of smut but not gratuitous (just say I've learnt a lot) and very appealing language which is why I think he has been so popular. I will persist this weekend then call it a day. Bye now.

You see folks. If we do this fairly regularly like we don't have to discuss books at all at our meetings. Just need to have lots of wine and food and talk. Clever huh?

I know this is not strictly literature, but you all need to know that I have just spent a very happy afternoon watching "Sex and the City: the movie". what fun. Maybe I just haven't seen a movie free of graphics and *&^(*!! rodents for too long, but it made me very happy. I now know that with the right shoes, I could look like SJP, have an apartment in Manhattan and own lots of handbags. Have the friends, don't want the Big, thanks.

Trying to work out how to start a new post, and not just post replies. Help please oh Grinomutti.
